Covetous Or Content

Are we covetous or content? We cannot be both at the same time.

1 Timothy 6:10: For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

I have been reminded many times that the love of money is the root of all evil: and that money itself is not the root of all evil. It is apparent to me that I needed those reminders often and I am confident that some of my readers need them too.

Hebrews 13:5: Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Philippians 4:19: But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

The thing that should drive away covetousness and make us content is having Jesus in our hearts and lives. He will never leave us nor forsake us and He will supply ALL of our need. Money is not the only thing that we should not covet. It is not the only covetousness that Jesus wants out of our lives.

Exodus 20:17: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour*s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour*s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour*s.

1 Timothy 6:17: Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

James 1:17: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

The true riches are the things that God gives us. There is more contentment in being good stewards of what he has given than in seeking more. It is frightful how much God has given me that I have wasted.

Proverbs 18:9: He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.

The only thing we should covet are God*s best gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:31: But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Can anyone deny that Jesus is the best gift God has given to men? And that His presence, His power, His love and His will are the best things we can possibly have in our lives.

1 Timothy 6:6: But godliness with contentment is great gain.

There is no godliness without contentment and there is no contentment without godliness and without both there is no great gain.
